Man Jumps from Burning Taxi

A man was treated for head injuries after he allegedly jumped out of a burning taxi on the N1 highway this evening.

Paramedics quickly responded to the scene and found the man sitting next to the highway against the barrier. The man and fellow occupants explained that they suddenly noticed the taxi was on fire and was not stopping. The man opened the door and jumped out of the moving taxi.

He sustained multiple injuries to his face and head. He was also treated on the scene for multiple injuries on the rest of his body. Another occupant of the taxi was also injured whilst trying to get out of the taxi when it came to a standstill down the highway in the slow lane. He was treated for injuries to his leg.

The two injured occupants were transported by ER24 EMS to a nearby hospital for further medical management.

According to bystanders the taxi was full at the time, but no one else were injured.

The Johannesburg Fire and Metro Police Departments attended the scene. The cause for the fire is not known. Traffic was severely congested as the highway was closed off for a duration.
