A tow truck driver is in a critical condition after a 20 ton truck carrying bricks drove over his bakkie in Douglasdale this morning.

Paramedics from ER24 that arrived first on the scene found a chaotic scene covered with bricks that were flung from the truck during the collision.

The tow truck driver was found, barely breathing trapped partially under his vehicle. Paramedics knew that they had to rescue the man from the vehicle as soon as possible in order to save his life, as it was extremely difficult to reach him.

Fire fighters had to use the jaws of life to cut parts of the bakkie away from the man in order to free him quickly. The man was placed on life support equipment once he was out of the vehicle and paramedics utilized all of their knowledge and skills to save the man's life.

After almost an hour trapped in his bakkie, the man was freed and rushed off to Sandton Medi-Clinic for further medical management.

Another man also sustained critical injuries to his chest. He was found a few meters down the road next to his Toyota Yaris. It is understood that the tow truck and the truck collided head on with each other where after the truck driver apparently lost control and collided head on with the Yaris before smashing through a house wall next to the road leaving a trail of bricks.

The man in the Yaris was also attended to by paramedics and treated for serious chest injuries. He was also rapidly transported to hospital for further medical management.

Three occupants, including the driver of the truck, was injured in this collision. They sustained only minor injuries and were assessed by paramedics on the scene.

The road was completely closed off for traffic and the Johannesburg Metro Police will be investigating the incident.
