19 Injured in Head-on Smash
19 People have been involved in a serious head on collision between two bakkies on the notorious Malotto Road in Pretoria. It is believed that the two bakkies collided head on outside the SAPS Dog School at approximately 18h50.
Paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene quickly, only to find that two of the people have died and four were in a critical condition. The Fire Department had to use the jaws of life to rescue some of the trapped victims. Most of the patients were flung from the two vehicles. It is believed that most of the occupants were on the back of the two bakkies.
Whilst paramedics were attending to the initial accident, a luxury vehicle apparently lost control about 100 metres from the crash site and overturned several times in the direction of the paramedics. Paramedics rushed themselves towards the overturned vehicle.
This time two adults and a baby were involved in this accident. The baby was in a critical condition, but deteriorated very quickly. Paramedics from ER24 initiated emergency resuscitation, but unfortunately the baby died on the scene. The two adults, believed to be the parents are both in a critical condition.
The exact cause for the initial and secondary accident is not known and will be investigated by the local law enforcement. The road has been closed off for traffic in both directions and no commuters are allowed to pass through the scene.
A total of 22 people were involved in this accident. Three people have died, of which one was a baby. Six people are in a critical condition. All of the patients were transported by ambulance to the Mamelodi and Pretoria Academic Hospitals.
