Peak Hour Chaos on N1

Yesterday morning the N1 between Hans Strijdom and William Nicol was slower than usual during peak hour.

ER24 EMS attended to three accidents on the N1 (direction north) between Hans Strijdom and William Nicol off-ramps.

At approximately 08h15 three vehicles collided with each other and caused a complete blockage of the slow and emergency lanes. A female driver sustained minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics on scene. Fortunately no other injuries occurred in this accident.

Shortly after, another accident occurred. This time a 25 year old male is in a serious condition after his motorbike collided with a BMW. The rider was thrown onto the highway and came to a landing in the middle lane. When paramedics arrived on scene, only a bystander's emergency triangle was keeping the young man safe from other vehicles on the highway.

The rider sustained multiple lacerations and abrasions on his body. He was stabilized and then immobilised on scene and transported in a stable condition to the Life Fourways Hospital.

The driver of the BMW sustained no injuries.

Only the slow lane was open for commuters in a northern direction.

After the motorbike accident, a vehicle crashed down the embankment just after Hans Strijdom. Paramedics attended to to occupants on the scene, but both refused hospital transportation. The cause for this accident is not known.

Again, traffic was brought to a halt due to curious on-lookers. All the accidents occurred in the northern direction of the highway.
